Iain Smith, the owner of Smith's Wines and Spirits spent twenty years playing house music across night clubs in Europe plus running two night clubs in Bristol and Exeter as well as his own cocktail bar. He then discovered "the joy of aged white Burgundy" and left the night club scene to join Majestic where he worked for four years learning the trade. After more than two years searching he finally found his first shop at 39 Magdalen Road where he traded from 2012 to 2019. He chose Magdalen Road because of its independent nature and so when he moved it was just a few doors down the road. He claims to have tasted everything in his shop and "for every product that makes it on to my shelves at least thirty are disregarded". He also runs supper clubs, with just one table where he provides the catering himself "good honest food, so it's certainly more farmhouse than fine dining" but, he reassures us, accompanied by spectacular wines, an opportunity "to share the simple pleasures that life has to offer (as long as it involves food and/or wine!)".

I became a mum and wanted to build a business that would work around my family. I started making various crafts and selling them at Craft Fairs which led on to selling in people’s homes. I was always being told that I should have a shop which was a pipe dream really, but one day just after I had my third child my husband noticed a shop to let in my favourite independent shopping street. My husband said go for it and he gave me the confidence to go for it and I did! Twelve years on and my children growing up I am still in my little shop, on my favourite Street, Loving what I do. I have always loved finding different items and meeting the very clever people that make them, and then being able to showcase them in Leaf Street. Being an independent shop I believe enables us to offers the shopping experience that people remember and enjoy, and hope that this continues for many a year to come!"

67 2019-2026+ Nourish Zero Waste, wholefoods. Founder of Nourish, Sarah Martin opened her first shop in Topsham in 2018 and it was the town's first business of its kind. In 2019, she opened a second shop in Magdalen Road, Exeter, a street well-known and loved for its range of independent shops, restaurants and cafes. The trio of shops was finally completed by a store in Ashburton, opened in 2021. While Sarah celebrated the "amazing" welcome from Ashburton, she confirmed the closure of her Topsham branch just a few months later. She said it had been "a long time coming unfortunately", following what she described as "months of heartache". She said she had noticed that many of her Topsham customers were not local to the town and speculated that this may be due to the number of second homes in the area.
67 2023 Mar 29 DevonLive. An independent Devon business has announced that it has ceased trading after five years. The Zero Waste shop was one of the first of its kind and aimed to help locals shop more sustainably. Nourish Zero Waste, a shop that allowed customers to shop for food and household items with reusable containers rather than single use packaging, has announced the closure of its remaining two stores.
67 2023 On Sunday (March 26), Nourish Zero Waste announced that the remaining two stores had closed. In a Facebook post, they wrote: "It is with heavy hearts that we announce Nourish will not reopen and is no longer trading. Sarah, Charlotte, Natasha, Meg, Lu La and Xan would like to thank all of our wonderful customers for your support over the years and for becoming genuine friends. We will miss you all; if anyone would like to keep in touch please leave your details through the letterbox."
67 2023 Some Magdalen Road traders have recently said they are seeing a downturn in trade and one has even closed due to the now permanent one-way system. However, Nourish Zero Waste previously told DevonLive that they are in favour of the layout as it reduced road noise and promoted cycling in the area.
67 2023-2026+ Soon after the report below it is good to discover that Nourish Zero Waste has been resurrected by Dan Taylor, The Grocer on The Green who is located across the road from Nourish. On his business Facebook on June 1, he posted a picture of himself holding the keys to the shop in front of a sign that read 'under new ownership, Nourish will be back'. He reopened Nourish by Monday, June 26 in time for the Magdalen Road Summer Market which is on Saturday, July 1. The shop was initially open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 1pm, to coincide with the opening hours of The Grocer on the Green.
